Full-field laser-imaging research allowed Polk to view a driver's entire vibrating surface, revealing the resonance that develops on speaker cones as they move. That resonance is the root cause of frequency-response distortions. Knowing this helped Polk engineers find the right combination of materials, geometry, and construction techniques to tune out the offending resonance. Nice looking, quality sounding speakers for the money By Shiro Tokisada Amakusa I bought these to replace my old cabinet-style 15" Pioneer speakers that I've had for a decade. They were on clearance and for the price, impossible to refuse. Compared to the old speakers, I am discovering new subtle layers of sound in my music and movies that I never knew were there. I got the cherry wood cabinets which are actually a thin veneer over particleboard. Despite this, they are very heavy and normal household disturbances such as vacuum cleaners, children, and the occasional errant foot strike will not move them from their spot. They look very nice and attract compliments from friends, if that kind of thing matters to you. The tall size comes with a footprint that is not actually that big, similar to the size of my real (size 12) foot print. They take up less floor space than my old speakers. Strengths: nice looks, much better sound than your garden variety speakers, often can be found at about 1/3 the MSRP if you know where and when to visit. Weak side: The bass response is not that impressive for such large speakers and you would do well to pair the R50's with a powered subwoofer. The only real problem: now that I've had the Polk R50's for a while, I am already wanting better speakers. Value for Money, Sounds very clean By Vikram Kalyanaraman I give this 4 stars because I'm comparing it to my powered studio monitors which I probably should not be doing :) These speakers sound quite balanced over their range and they start taper off around 80 Hz at the low end however, I'm able to use these for movie watching in my home theater without a subwoofer. They handle the lows pretty well. Mids and highs are extremely clear. I've heard them at a friend's place paired with A PSW-10 Subwoofer from Polk and that combination is pretty good. They are going on clearance as I write this review, but are still worth it if you can buy them anywhere. You should not have to pay more than $170 for pair. Great fan, tricky install By Mcdonald Mirabile Amazon shipped this item me very quickly and I installed it just today. Installation with this fan was trickier than others I had installed. There were too many screws, literally...I had screws left over and I followed the instructions precisely. The install took about 2 hours. The fan is very quiet, and the light is sufficient. I wish the light could dim, but I knew it couldn't going into it. I'd check the Hunter website and make sure the blades co-ordinate with your existing decor...the website shows the true colors more accurately than Amazon's pictures. 38 of 42 people found the following review helpful. Not recommended! By Austex Let me preface this with two items. First, I remodel homes as a hobby and have installed many fans in the past. Second, I have used Hunter products in several previous projects and been happy with them. I don't know what has happened at Hunter, but everything about their products have gone downhill. The instructions are horrible. One example, the drawing of many of the screws do not match what comes with the fan. It almost seems like the assembly instructions were done in another country. On the subject of parts - some were missing. The overall assembly design is also terrible. Finally, the quality of the fan is poor. The remote control is made of crappy plastics and is intermittent. I am so put off by this fan that I gave it away and will never buy another Hunter product. I absolutely LOVE Amazon and will continue to use them, but I would not recommend buying this type of item from them. Why? Because by the time you realize what a piece of crap this item is you have all 20+ parts unpacked and partially assembled. It is too much of a hassle to get everything back in the box and deal with the hassle of shipping it back. After initial problem, now it works great By Steve Riley I just want to update my review - this fan wasn't working at first, it would come on several times a day by itself, either the light or the fan itself. Hunter sent me out a new part, but that didn't fix it. I called again, and they sent out another part - now the fan is working great now. It's been two full weeks and hasn't come on by itself, so I think it's fixed! The customer service was excellent. I like the more "modern" look of this fan. I've raised my "stars" rating to 4 since it is working now. It's not a 5 because of the initial problem, and one other design issue I don't like. The way the glass is installed over the light, it's very difficult to take off, as the metal ring with three screws in it holds the glass and needs to be removed, but you need to hold the glass at the same time. It's almost a two person job (on ladders!) to remove this, or you risk dropping the glass. Of course with a flourescent light - I won't need to remove this very often to replace the bulb. Most lights you hold the glass, and remove screws with your fingers. This you need to hold the glass, and a screwdriver at the same time. One other thing to be aware of, the flourescent bulb is one of those rings types, and is quite bright. No dimming available. It doesn't use much power which is good, just be aware it's bright. Kosmo By Kosmo Well the picture of this product is accurate and when I received it and opened it up, I had no complaints. I laid out all the pieces and began the assembly process. All of the hardware was in a nice container in the center of the packaging. I was impressed. Then when I started laying out the hardware I noticed that the cam locks were not durable...they felt like some kind of strong plastic and that they provided "extra" pieces. WOW I thought, how nice that the manufacturer acknowledges you may need an extra one or two. My excitement ended there. As they say it went all downhill from here. The reason for the extra cam locks became evident as they are not durable at all...very cheap. As I started tightening each cam lock, one by one they broke very easily. I found myself with a needle nose plyers pulling out the pieces. I had finally used up all the extra cam locks included in the packaging. There was two other issues...the washers that were listed on the product list were not included and the pre-drilled holes on the bottom piece were not pre-drilled. I did contact the manufacturer about the washers and they offered to send them to me, but at the time I thought I could go to Home Depot and get them myself, so I did. I am currently searching for additional cam locks that are more durable. I would contact the manufacturer but I don't want replacement cam locks that are just as poor as the ones that were included. The piece is standing but I tell people don't touch or move it as it will fall apart at the touch. I wish I would have sent it back in the 30 day window and now regret not doing that. It will eventually come together tightly once I find better cam locks but what a hassle. See all 1 customer reviews...

Most helpful customer reviews 30 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Good All Purpose Bargain Speaker By Under the Influence First, don't be mislead by the price. The Polk Monitor 30 has great potenial and a huge bargain at its close out price (replaced by TSi series which is nearly identical). A bookshelf with depth, both in that it protrudes twelve inches from front to rear when placed on a wall, and, also, provides ample bass for its stature. It matches well with Polk's CS1 or CS10 center channel speaker for surround systems as a front and surround channel, or can be paired with the larger M40 bookshelf, or M50 and M60 towers as a surround speaker. It should be able to outperform most satellite speaker systems, but will stand out prominently from the wall when hung from it's bracket. On opposite end of the hanging bracket, short legs keep the speaker evenly spaced from the wall and allow the rear port to breathe. Since both Polk's Monitor/TSi bookshelf and center channel speakers provide ample levels of bass (55Hz), it offers more flexibility when used with a subwoofer than small satellite speakers. Subwoofer crossover can be set lower allowing the sub to handle the lower frequencies with more detail. While crossover with a satellite speaker generally should be set no lower than the 120-150Hz area, which is at the uppermost range of most subwoofers, the M30 can easily be adjusted down to the 60-80Hz area. Of course the extra speaker size can take more power and produce more volume than satellites, as well. However, for front channel use the Monitor has limitations. For mid size rooms the Monitor 30 is a bit small as a front channel and noticeably lacking in bass detail no matter what the room dimension. There are bookshelfs that use larger mid/woofer drivers or at least two 5 inch drivers (and one tweeter) that can produce quite a bit more detail and volume in the lower frequencies. However, you'll have to spend at least $300 for such a pair that match the clarity and quality design of the Monitor 30. The other option is to purchase the Monitors for $100 and spend an additional $100-200 on a subwoofer to have even greater range than the larger bookshelfs. I use four Monitor 30's as surround and rear channels in a fairly spacious room (16x24 & vaulted ceiling) with Polk Monitor 60 towers and CS1 in the front. Though the 30's are much closer to the listener than the fronts, the levels must be adjusted a couple of decibels higher to make surround effects really come out. In fairness, the front channels employ eight 5.25" drivers versus only two to four drivers depending on 5.1 or 7.1 soundtrack. While listening to music, I prefer using Dolby ProLogicIIx (7.1 surround), rather than two channel stereo. Since the Monitor 30's match so seamlessly with the other speakers, the soundstage is opened up and less volume is needed. Again, don't let the price fool you. There are many steeply priced speakers using same size drivers that will only marginally outperform and sometimes underperform the Monitor 30. The Dynaudio 52SE for example, costing around $1,000, when tested by Audioholics produced great lower bass until it bottomed out due to lack of internal bracing and overall driver design. When given time to break-in, matched appropriately with other speakers, and tuned with the latest A/V Receivers, the 30 can be a very solid performer. 25 of 26 people found the following review helpful. I am using these as fronts in my 7.1 surround set up, with Polk M10's as the surrounds and a Pioneer VSX-1018 avr and Sony 40S2010 LCD. Will make your radio rock By Samuel Chell I thought I was a monophonic purist until seeing a Consumer Reports review that rated the sound quality of the Kloss Tivoli radio above even the Bose, Boston Acoustic, and Cambridge models providing it was hooked up to the satellite speaker. So for fifty bucks, why not? The speakers are on nightstands parallel with my head, so the sound is hardly balanced. On the other hand, it's kind of cool to hear a trombone coming from one side of the bed and an oboe from the other. So thumbs up on the extra speaker, though I'm not about to go crazy and install the Kloss sub-woofer underneath the bed. Not only is it over-priced but even without the sub-woofer the speakers, to my ears, are already bass-heavy. Maybe I'll reconsider if my cat stops purring and the prospect of a vibrating mattress suddenly seems attractive. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Dickens I liked the sound of the Tivoli Model Three all by itself quite a lot, considering it's only got one mono speaker and it's just a little clock radio. I liked it so much that I purchased the companion speaker. The companion speaker makes it sound really great. Considering this is a clock radio and mini-system, it sounds great! I highly recommend investment in the extra speaker for your Model Three. To compare the pair to my eight-year-old mid-priced boombox and to my mid-priced computer speaker system with subwoofer, the Tivoli Model Three with extra speaker rocks! Please see my amateur review about the Tivoli Model Three here on Amazon. I am now quite a Tivoli fan. I don't want the subwoofer. Your bass prefs might be very different from mine, but the Model Three with its companion speaker have plenty of bass for me. They seem wonderfully balanced between treble, bass and midrange, at least given my placement and room acoustics. (The Model Three itself offers no bass-treble adjustment, while the subwoofer does. Strange, but the basic pairing of the Model Three and speaker just works.) If you're thinking of ordering the subwoofer, I suggest you wait and try the Model Three with only the companion speaker first. But there are those who say the subwoofer is audio nirvana. Con: If you play the Model Three with the companion speaker really loud, it sounds distorted. I like the compactness, aesthetics, and sound so much that I'm planning on ordering the $200 CD player.
